Archived systems, and why they are kept separate
Some records describe systems that are no longer current. They stay on the register for reference, and they are excluded from every total on this site.
The federal record marks each system with a type. Where that type is Archive, the record is retained for historical reference and does not describe protection currently in place.
How this site handles them
- An archived system keeps its own page, because the record is public and someone looking for it should find it.
- The page carries a notice at the top saying the record is archived.
- The system is excluded from state totals, county totals and national figures.
Mixing archived records into a total is an easy mistake to make and a hard one to notice. It produces a page that says a county is protected by more systems than it has.
If you are looking at an archived record and need to know what applies now, the county page for the same area lists the current systems.
